Layers Palette for Negative Space Drawing

Everybody Has a Favorite

This drawing is unique because of its variety in color and form. Rather than using one image with supplementary filters and layers of brush-stroke techniques to cover the fragments, I tried to find a new image for each section of negative space. By doing this, the white form seems to pop out from the page. The textures are enriched through the use of smart filters and the blending option on the layer styles. To achieve the green background in the photo at the top left, I option selected the negative space and used the paint bucket, then overlapped another photo to have it show through the marble colors. Overall, this drawing is appealing to the eye.

Finished Product!

This drawing is unique because although I only used four different visual texture photos, there is great variation throughout the page. I favored using the blending options on the layer styles page for each mask; it gave the best effect to the background because the splattering yellow paint seems to be shattering through the cracking, bright red leaves overlaying its composition. Filters such as water color and ink outline for the black and white swirls in the skeleton emphasizes the loss of soul of a deceased human being. The viewer is first drawn to the bright colors behind the skeleton; however the eye travels next to the gaping space inside the skull and down the spine into the overwhelming white space. The piece is balanced and intriguing.

Countour Lines w/ Varying Objects From the Classroom

Complete!!

The focal point of my drawing is the central white shell. My eye travels to this subject first because it almost seems to glow when compared to the prominent gray scale of the background behind it. Next, my eye travels to the lower right corner because of the bright texture on the ovals, and from there, the artwork is identified piece by piece going clockwise. Value is a key component of my work; the eraser tool allowed me to create dips of color around and through objects to show illumination of important subjects. There are also thick and thin black, solid lines as a result of the variation I used in brushes. In fact, the background layer is composed entirely of a large scale, square-oriented brush. To magnify the importance of the wrench at the top of the page I used the glow effect with the assistance of Mr. Powers. Lastly, I incorporated a chalky outline around the top left shell so that it did not disappear into the powerful black values of the piece. Each object emerges from the confines of the page and is evident in its own way. Uniqueness and creativity are priority and I achieved these goals  by varying the strength and shape of my brushes, using a total of 18 layers, using Gaussian Blur for a soft textural background, and by successfully fitting 10 objects on one page with an overall appealing effect.

Layers Palette

I have accumulated about 25 layers over the two weeks we've been working on this project but I've abandoned a good percentage of them because they simply do not support my concentration anymore.

In progress-trying to discover better layering techniques :)
